Public Journaling of a Newbie Solopreneur #4: Why I Love the Medium Business Model

On Medium, you buy knowledge instead of buying something while consuming anything else

Nowadays, advertising is everywhere.

Think of social media; they are advertising platforms that convert engagement into potential purchases. When some engaged user buys something, the magic of monetization happens.

As you may know from my Public Journaling of a Newbie Solopreneur #3: I Have a Company!, I write to make a living, so I have absolutely nothing against monetization.

I believe content creators deserve a monetary reward, but I’m also convinced they should earn it because of the content they create, not the products they sponsor. Yeah, there could be a relation between the two, but… com’on!

The advertising mechanism

Advertising is rooted in distraction. You are pushed to buy a product while consuming content.

Think of advertisements during a YouTube video when you’re immersed in particular content, mood, and atmosphere, and, out of the blue, someone tries to sell you a trading course — it’s just an example. Do you like it? Isn’t it a distraction?
