When explaining to their audience how a product works, technical writers must be able to distinguish between two categories of concept.

Concepts that belong to the business domain the product is in. And concepts that are peculiar to the product due to how it was designed and implemented.

Let’s consider an example.

Suppose you write the technical documentation for a Software as a Service (SaaS) that automates business accounting management. Also, assume that SaaS back-office users are the audience of the documentation.

The concepts you will use in the documentation will be of two categories:

  • Business accounting concepts that every expert in the field knows.
  • Bespoke concepts that the SaaS implements. Those concepts are built on top of business accounting concepts but invented to make the SaaS work.

If you ask software engineers who built the SaaS, chances are that they are no longer able to distinguish between the two categories above. They are too focused on the solution — building the SaaS — to stay sensitive to the problem’s…
